Intermission: Behind Chintan's Haiku

Find his haiku on the back cover of a bunch of Fabaceae.

"When the monsoon season ends, we see a lot of butterflies on the Crotalaria spp plant (Rattlepods). The adult butterflies, especially Tiger butterflies, Danaus spp. mainly come for the nectar and also for the toxic alkaloids Pyrollizidine Alkaloids (PAs). This behavior is called ‘plant scratching’. They imbibe these chemicals inside them to increase their pheromone levels which are necessary for mating. Hence they just don’t come for the nectar. Flutter-bys is an unofficial term for butterflies which was used by poet and novelist Maxwell Bodenheim."

Aissa Domingo ↯

Aissa Domingo is an artist, photographer, and illustrator from the National Museum of the Philippines. Since 2010, her scientific illustrations and photographs of animals, plants, and fossils have been published in several scientific journals. She led the reconstructive painting of both replica and actual taxidermy specimen of “Lolong”, a famous giant crocodile with taxidermists, researchers, and scientists. As an artist in a scientific institution, she developed her skill in understanding the synergy between the sciences and arts and the convergence of these important disciplines, for a better appreciation of the wealth and beauty of the natural history of the Philippines.

Barbara Wanhill ↯

Barbara Wanhill is an elementary art teacher in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Her interest in drawing botanical themes started in British Columbia while completing her BFA (U. Vic. 1997).
As a suburban home owner, one of her current interests is trying to convince her husband to rewild their small patch of front lawn to native Alberta plants. Until then, Black medic is enjoying free rein.

Pianist, singer, composer and collagist from Madrid, Spain.
All her creations, both musical and visual, share a minimalist essence in favor of emotion and the beauty of simplicity. With few elements, she likes to create a “less is more” that contains great depth and background, inviting us to stop, feel and listen (to ourselves).
She has participated in solo and group exhibitions and different publications, and her collages and music intertwine and complement each other in her creative processes.

He has been working as a botanist with various research institutes, NGOs, and private companies in the field of sustainability, biodiversity and ecological restoration. Galadriel Watson’s linocut prints explore the power of art when it comes to expressing emotions, voicing opinions, and honouring the beauty and joy that surround us. I am an artist from Ukraine. I am a chemist by profession, but an artist by vocation. Now I am a soldier in AFU, working as a combat medic.
‍Caragana scythica is endemic to the northern Black Sea region, my homeland, which is currently being occupied and killing by Russia. I joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in order to return home with weapons in my hands and protect all of us - flowers, land and people.
